3 Month Review
It’s been 3 months since I started my job at Imagine Cruising. I’ll always look back on my time at Intuita fondly but sometimes you just need a change. A big driver for me is feeling valued as an integral part of something, which is difficult as a consultant as you never really own anything you produce and don’t get the sense of satisfaction of seeing your hard work get put to good use. Hence taking this opportunity as a lead developer in-house role where I can own the reporting standards across the whole business. Ironically, I seem to have spent the majority of my time over the past couple of weeks in meetings with the SLT giving my opinions on all things data. I guess I must still have my consultant face on!
It was a really tough decision leaving Intuita and I had to make a literal list of pros and cons. I would recommend doing that if you’re faced with a tough decision. The key though is comparing how much you personally value each item on the list. That’ll be different for everyone – if I showed you my pros and cons list you’d probably say I was crazy to leave my job (and some of you did!). But at the end of the day, I had to trust my gut that it felt like the right decision.
For example, I traded a job which was a short walk from my house for a 40-minute commute. But I really appreciate being able to genuinely collaborate with colleagues in a way you can only do in person. Rather than a convenient office space that I use to join an endless string of Teams calls. Although I can completely understand why a lot of people favour remote working.
No job is perfect but this is definitely where I’m supposed to be right now. I find that true satisfaction comes from what you can put into a job, rather than what you can get out of it. Work out what’s important to you and what your non-negotiables are – I did make sure there was a shower in my new office for my morning runs! That reminds me, I should probably get myself a new running top…
